Layer photos

Layer photos and videos.

You’ve probably seen this style of photo editing pop up on your Instagram feed. It’s trending among creatives and influencers — and for good reason! Layering photos adds interest and variety to your feed, plus it’s such an easy way to introduce cool colors and patterns to your photos. Our layering feature makes it a snap to stack your favorite photos.

  • Tip #1

If you want to get especially creative, we love using videos as backgrounds for static photos. This gives otherwise ordinary photos a scroll-stopping sense of movement and dimension.

  • Tip #2

With Instasize, you can even layer videos on videos. This comes in handy if you want a polished way to showcase a slideshow of multiple photos or B-roll from a photo shoot, but the possibilities are endless!

  • Tip #3

Add a frame to your top layer to add distinction between the foreground and the background. Alter the weight and color of the line to customize your framed look.

Let’s get layering.

All natural.

When choosing layers, nature is a great place to look. Natural textures and patterns make perfect backdrops for your main image — think clouds, flowers, rocks, buildings, brick, chain link fences, etc.

Balance is best.

Keep your photos and videos simple so the final image doesn’t appear too busy. To maintain balance in your layered compositions, you might consider zooming in on your photos, using blank washes of color, or even using slow-motion video footage.

Consider your colors.

Use content that complements the colors in your foreground. Depending on the look you’re going for, you might choose photos with monochromatic colors, or complementary colors for contrast.
